JOANNE PIEPOL GALLERY

Joanne Piepol grew up in Detroit, Michigan. As a young child living in an urban and industrial hub, Joanne came to appreciate the beauty of landscapes and the simplicity of nature. Her appreciation of the forms, shapes and colors that occur in nature grew as she and her sister enjoyed family camping trips during summer visits to Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, especially near the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Joanne moved to Massachusetts twenty years ago and fell in love with the beauty and variety of New England landscapes. Joanne’s passion for art, nature and gardening as well as her sense of detail, are deeply rooted in her childhood experiences and have influenced her decisions throughout her adult life.

Joanne studied fine arts at the University of Michigan School of Art (Ann Arbor, MI), the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM) and Pratt Art Institute (Brooklyn, NY), majoring in Photography and Ceramics. Her travels have mostly been within the U.S. but she has also lived and studied in Osaka, Japan.

Joanne’s images evoke a deep sense of pleasure and calm. They are a meditation on the beauty and form of the natural world.

“The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. He studies it because he takes pleasure in it; and he takes pleasure in it because it is beautiful ... the intimate beauty which comes from the harmonious order of its parts and which a pure intelligence can grasp”.
